In 1718 Seiemon Kashiwaraya published a woodblock-printed picture book entitled Ehon Miyama Shika (i.e., Deep Mountain Deer Picture Book). Later Zenbei Maekawa republished it with the title Sōmoku Chōjū Shoshiki Etehon (i.e., Plants, Birds and Animals Painting Book for Artisans). It included the sixteen pages of bird pictures and seventeen pages of flower pictures shown in this gallery. The flowers and birds drawn by the anonymous artist are challenging to identify for two reasons. First, their shapes, surface details and colors are not accurate. Second, some of them are either unnamed or their Japanese name included in the picture is no longer used today. The English and latin names given here for the multiple flowers or birds incuded in a picture proceed from the picture’s top left to bottom right.
